Duo Lupino

Biography

They have known each other for twenty years and, from teacher and student, they have become traveling companions. They are teachers at L'Escola de Músics, in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona, and have been playing together in different formats for some time. In 2021 they began to shape a new project, the Duo Lupino. And, after writing their own repertoire and shooting in different theaters in Catalonia for three years, they have decided to record their first album, entitled The sky vault.

El Tolo comes from the world of classical music, especially contemporary music, and has dedicated itself to premiering works by current composers. Víctor, on the other hand, has a jazz background and has always had concerns in the field of composition and arrangements. These two paths have finally crossed to combine the art of each soul. In this new project they dedicate themselves to an intimate and meditative chamber repertoire, with original music written by Víctor especially for this formation.

The name of the project is a tribute to two very influential artists of the 20th century. First of all, Ida Lupino (1918-1995), actress, screenwriter, director and producer of Hollywood films, one of the most prominent filmmakers of the 40s and 50s who has left us an important cinematic legacy with a strong social and especially feminist message. Next, the pianist, organist, composer, arranger and musical leader Carla Bley (1936-2023), great reference for the duo and iconic artist who has left a deep mark on the world of music with a unique and unmistakable style.

Both were avant-garde and ground-breaking artists, and also restless and insubordinate women who had to fight to survive in a patriarchal and conservative industry. In 1964, Bley writes Ida Lupino, a song dedicated to the filmmaker and fellow activist that ends up becoming a key piece of her repertoire and a standard in contemporary jazz literature. Sixty years later, Oller and García-Plata pay tribute to the two artists with new compositions that long to continue the artistic and human legacy of these great legends.
